Hounds sign Anthony Obodai

Two signings in one week! Tuffy is going to spoil us. Today the Hounds finally announced the much rumored signing of Anthony Obodai. While so far the signings have been offensive in nature, Obodai is a defensive midfielder who will help sure up the other side of the ball. Being that he is more of a defensive player Obodai doesn’t have the pure stats to wow you with. Instead let’s take a look at some of the clubs he’s played for.

Obodai has spent most of his career playing in the Eredivisie- the top league in the Netherlands. From 2001-2005 he played for AFC Ajax, appearing in 21 matches. During that time Ajax won the Eredivisie cup twice, the KNVB Cup once (equivalent to the English FA cup), and the Johan Cruijff Shield once (the winner of the Eredivisie plays the winner of the KNVB Cup in a one off game).

During the 2002-2003 season Obodai spent time in the Belgian Pro League (top league) while on loan to Beerschot AC. Obodai appeared in 29 games that season.

From 2005-2007 Obodai was back in the Eredivisie playing for Sparta Rotterdam. He appeared in 47 games during this time and even donned the captain’s armband for a while. After Sparta Rotterdam Obodai joined RKC Waalwijk from 2007-2010, making a whopping 88 appearances. At the time RKC Waalwijk played in the second division.

Overall Obodai made 185 appearances while playing in Europe from 2001-2010. In 2010 Obodai played one season for the Houston Dynamo with another recent signing by the Hounds, Joseph Ngwenya. Also of note Obodai has been capped several times by the Ghana national team, and played in the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship and the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship.

Obodai brings a lot of experience to the Hounds from his time in Europe. He was one of the few bright spots for Phoenix FC Wolves last season, and should make a great addition to the Hounds. With these signings the Hounds now have a strong midfield and the league MVP as a striker. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the defense.
