GAME 32 RECAP: Battle Chess

Riverhounds-Cincinnati

In the third and final matchup of the regular season the Hounds and Cincy played a chess match to a perfect stalemate on Saturday. Fresh off of securing a home playoff game the Hounds were looking to keep the momentum going, and I suppose they did with a draw even if it wasn’t the most satisfying. Lilley came out with an attack heavy starting line up showing that he wants to keep the pedal to the floor going into the post season. For much of the match it seemed to work. The Hounds controlled the game well and kept Cincy in check. The attack looked dangerous and tallied a whopping 18 shots over the course of the game. But almost as expected at this point the finishing left something to be desired. Only 4 of the 18 shots were on target and…

GAME 26 QUICK RECAP: Cincinnati Bungle

annoyed-dog

I hate stutter step penalties. Hate them. Hate them with a burning passion. I have no stats but I can’t help but feel they increase the chance of a striker boning it up ten fold. That fraction of a second has just as much of a chance to make a striker over think it at the worse possible time as it does faking out the keeper. Take a penalty decisively and do it clinically. Get the job done.

In retrospect that penalty set the tone for the rest of the game. Sure we scored shortly after but then the Hounds go and bone it up. Four times in the second half of the season we’ve given up a goal in the 80+ minute that changed the outcome of the game for the worse. Four times in eleven games. Nearly every other game. It’s…

US OPEN CUP RECAP: Ugh

Another year, another disappointing Open Cup run. Last night the Hounds fell to FC Cincinnati 3-1, giving up the first goals at home and ultimately receiving their first loss of 2018. It was a frustrating result but not for the usual reason of falling to amateurs. With the way the season has started in league play we now expect results, even against opponents equal to or greater than us. Dangerous thoughts I know. Perhaps getting smacked down was something we needed to bring us back to earth. Small victory that it wasn’t in league play.

By all accounts leading up to Wednesday the Hounds were going to make the Open Cup the top priority. The next round would’ve been against an MLS team and the FO would love that PR boon. Yet the starting line up seemed to indicate otherwise. I’m sure Lilley…

After a two year hiatus, the Riverhounds find themselves back in the third round of the US Open Cup. For their efforts last week in Erie, the Hounds host the Fussyboys of Cincinnati. Cincy’s trip to tonight was a bit more arduous, needing the extra 30 minutes to fend of Detroit City. At stake tonight is a trip to the fourth round, an evening against an MLS side, and a coin toss to decide where that match would be held. Nothing big, right?

The last time the Hounds…
