Player News and Notes: Hounds Linked with Experienced Defender

There is a rumor circulating that the Hounds have been in contact with the representatives of recently released defender David Carney.  David, who’s played for an impressive list of clubs in the past, was released by New York (MLS) early last week.  He appeared in 9 games after being reunited with fellow countryman Tim Cahill, including 2 playoff matches where he struggled vs Houston.  David is a left-footed player who can play both left back and left midfield.  From all indications, he was a disappointment in New York but should have plenty in the tank to contribute significantly at the USL Pro level.  Do the Riverhounds have enough moxie to capture a player who’s played for the likes of Sheffield United, Norwich City, FC Twente and Blackpool over the past 5 years?  Only time will tell.  The Riverhonds back-line struggled for consistency last season despite the efforts of CB Andrew Marshall and starting LB and team captain Richie Costanzo.  Adding an experienced defender to compliment Marshall or replace Costanzo could go a long way to solidifying the defense.  Carney also has experience playing left wing, another position that the Hounds are looking to upgrade.  If we do capture the former Australian international we’ll be very interested to see how things work out.

David Carney with Sheffield United…are we comfortable supporting a former dirty blade?!?
