Midweek Recap: Pittsburgh Proud

The Hounds battle strong for 90 minutes but falter in extra time.

What a night! In a packed Highmark Stadium we saw some very entertaining soccer, and despite the score line it was one of the best games I’ve experienced. Sitting here this morning I’m still trying to process it all.

D.C. United came out with a stronger line up than expected, but the Hounds rose up to the challenge for most of the game. Even after going down early they kept up the pressure and were able to draw a PK not long after. It was a back and forth game that overall looked pretty even from my vantage point. Great stretches of pressure from both squads. It wasn’t until the end, and especially in extra time, that the Hounds really started to stumble against the MLS side. Conditioning is where the…

D.C. United – 1/1

D.C. United comes to town today for one of the biggest matches in Pittsburgh soccer history. Without question the Hounds are the underdogs today. D.C. United are one of the best teams in MLS this year and traditionally have done well in the Open Cup. MLS squads swept through lower division teams last night going 8-0, and there may be little to slow them down from continuing the trend tonight.

This is a spunky Hounds team though. They have the best offense in…

After Angulo’s MVP season in 2013 it was announced him and Dallman signed two year deals with the Hounds. What was buried during the hoopla was Angulo’s second year was an option, that apparently wasn’t exercised. Angulo was a pivotal player during the Hounds inaugural season at Highmark Stadium in 2013. He was exciting to watch and ended up taking home several league awards such as the aforementioned MVP…

Off-Season Speculation: Division 2 Hullabaloo

Over the weekend Reckless Challenge broke the story that the USL PRO is looking to apply for Division 2 status with the USSF in 2017. The story sure sent a shock wave across online soccer communities. With the ever increasing MLS influence, USL PRO becoming a Division 2 league has been something people liked to speculate about for a while now. To see it in an actual scoop caught a lot of folks by surprise. For those of you knew to following lower division soccer, the USL used to encompass Division 2 and Division 3 with USL-1 and USL-2. In 2009-2010 there was a split with some teams breaking off to form the new NASL while the rest stayed with USL PRO. NASL became D2, USL PRO became D3, and here we are today.

There’s already been a lot of…
