Game 16 Recap: 4th of July Dud

Hertzog-Tifo-2017

I’ve lost track of how many times I come out of a game thinking “well they played alright, it just wasn’t their night.” It’s getting tiring to say the least. Maybe the guys had too many hot dogs earlier in the day, or maybe Charlotte just has our number- we’re 0-5-2 against them over the last three seasons. Whatever it was, Tuesday night sure didn’t go according to plan.

While the roster may have been different, the Hounds played similar to how they did against Tampa nearly two weeks before. This time though the offense couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net to save their lives (save for Walsh’s pity goal in the 92nd minute). It wasn’t for lack of chances either. Hertzog and Parkes had several great shots. They just either couldn’t find the corner of the net…

Know Your Enemy Reloaded: Charlotte Independence (6-3-4, 5th in East)

clt

The Hounds try to make it two wins in a row at home as they set to host the Charlotte Independence for the traditional 4th of July match at Highmark. It is the lone match on the USL schedule so all eyes in the league will be on Pittsburgh.

Charlotte will be coming in hot as well, winning three matches in a row vaulting them to 5th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 6-3-4. The three wins have come against Rochester, Richmond and Harrisburg, two of them at home.  The win at home to Rochester did come just last night on July 1st so hopefully there will be some tired legs in the heat and humidity on Tuesday night.

This will be the second meeting of the two teams this season, the first being a 1-1 draw in Charlotte early in April,…

Game 5 Recap: Get Those Road Points

charlotte_pittsburgh_2017

Road points are never bad points. That’s probably the main take away from this match. After an exciting opening ten minutes the following 80 were a little ho-hum. Charlotte dominated the possession stat (70/30) thanks to some particularly defensive play by the Hounds, especially in the second half. Part of that is playing the counter attack. You’re going to sit back more and wait for the other team to come to you. Part of it was undoubtedly tired legs. We’ve seen the Hounds struggle to keep up energy late into the game. Playing their third match in eight days put lead weights in their boots from the get go. Fortunately even with all their possession Charlotte wasn’t able to do anything with it thanks to a strong performance by the Hounds D. It’s a little too early to tell if that was…

Know Your Enemy: Charlotte

Charlotte Independence (0-1-1, 14th in East)

The Hounds travel to Charlotte this weekend to try and put behind the frustrating midweek loss to St. Louis and build on the nice result they had last weekend on the road in Charleston. This could be a good time to play Charlotte, who are winless through two games and appear to be hurting with some injuries in key spots.

Charlotte is 0-1-1 with a loss at home to Charleston and a road draw at Orlando City B and not being too impressive in the process, another road win could be on the horizon for Pittsburgh. Charlotte though is coming off a week’s rest, not playing last week and only having played two games on the season.  This could factor in with the combination of the Hounds traveling south back to back weeks and playing at home on…
