Looking to bolster the back line, head coach Justin Evans looks to have turned his attention to former Puerto Rico Islanders central defender Anthony Vazquez.
Vazquez split time last season between the Islanders and the the Puerto Rican National Team. He earned NASL defender of the week honors last September, helping the club post 13 clean sheets and finish 3rd in the league table. He was involved in last summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers, starting all three games for Puerto Rico at center back.
The Brooklyn, NY native completed a stellar collegiate career at Monmouth University winning back to back NEC titles while earning Regional All-America and All-NEC First Team honors. He was also a member of a 2008 Puerto Rican national team that competed in 2010 World Cup Qualifiers and has captained the U20 squad. Anthony has a total of 11 senior caps.
By all accounts, Vazquez is a big, strong no-nonsense defender who can tackle and play in the air.
