Player News and Notes: Returning Talent

2012 was a visibly disappointing season full of frustration.  We missed the playoffs, posted a sub par home record and struggled to create consistent offense.  Injuries to key performers and administrative issues resulted in a lack of on-field cohesion.

Additionally, many of us felt like a few of our veterans gave up on the team by the end of the season.  However, there were some players who, despite the scoreline and standings, gave 110% and left everything on the pitch.  Let’s take a closer look at some of those guys who I’m happy to see coming back for the 2013 campaign.

Darren Ammo – Forward

Darren came to us last season from Columbus and quickly left an impression during the preseason.  Unfortunately, there were some problems getting his international clearance which held him out of the first quarter of the season.  The former MLS 3rd round pick displayed pace, power and skill to go along with a rocket shot.  He picked up 3 goals in 17 appearances but looked dangerous every time he got on the field.  With a full season under his belt, we feel like Darren has a great chance to feature in the starting XI and score 8-12 goals.

Matt Kassel – Midfield / Defender

After being released by New York (MLS) in late February, Matt came to Pittsburgh with something to prove.  He was our leading goal scorer (6) and most consistent performer. He split time between right back, center back and right mid earning 2nd Team USL pro All-League honors.  With an upgraded supporting cast, we feel like the former U18 US international will only perform better in 2013.

Jason Kutney – Midfield / Defender

Last season was long, and it probably felt like years for the Riverhound’s CEO.  Jason was instrumental in making The Highmark a reality; attending countless meetings and enduring many sleepless nights.  Somehow he managed to make it on the field a few times, most notably as a 2nd half sub during the final game at CVHS where he was affectionately serenaded by the supporters.  We’d love to see Kutney return to his top form, but lingering injuries, off-field duties and increased competition on the right side will probably limit his contribution.  However, if there is one man alive that you never underestimate, it’s JK19.

Louie Rolko – Defender (CB)

Team captain and USL veteran Louie “Joey” Rolko battled all season.  His tireless effort and leadership kept this squad together during some tough times.  I must admit that I wasn’t crazy about the decision to give Rolko the armband, but he quickly won respect with his unquestioned efforts.  The “Joey” thing, well, that’s not really his nickname.  Truth is, my daughters made that up and unfortunately for Louie, it stuck.

Sterling Flunder – Defender (LB)

Another fan favorite and solid performer at left back, Sterling again featured in the starting XI for the club in 2012.  Flunder continued to make great runs down the wing all summer long while playing responsible defense.  If he can develop some chemistry with our new midfielders, the attack from the left could be scary fast, leaving teams FLUNDERSTRUCK.  Sorry, I couldn’t resist…

Richie Costanzo – Midfield

The Pittsburgh native came home after spending a few seasons in Rochester.  Richie provided the midfield presence we’d lacked in 2011.  He is composed on the ball, a good tackler and can play deep or up in an advanced position.  We didn’t get to see Costanzo feature in the attack too much last season but hope that playing with Alfonso will free him up to get forward.  That said, Richie is going to have to work hard and prove effective to stay on the field with the additions of Seamon and Kinne.

Seth C’dBaca – Midfield

During his rookie year, the winger scored the game winner in his first start on April 21st.  An injury limited him a bit, but he showed flashes of creativity and good short range passing.  With the new additions, we don’t envision him as a starter as much as we do an impact sub.  That said, we’re confident that C’dBaca will make picking the starting XI a challenge for coach Evans.

Mike Green – Defender

Mike was another rookie in 2012 who saw considerable playing time as the season went on, chipping in a goal.  He opened eyes in the preseason but didn’t play much once the regular season got underway.  He earned time in the midfield and along the back line when needed.  He was strong in the box and we think that he may be a surprise starter at center back at some point this year.  Louie and Niko must play well with Mike waiting for his chance.

Greg Blum – Keeper

Greg could start on many teams in this league and we’re lucky to have him backing up Gilstrap.  We don’t see Greg as a threat to Hunter’s starting job, but we won’t be too worried about a drop off in quality if anything happens over the course of the campaign.

We’re still looking for a few players to be added up front but we’re excited about the talent and competition for multiple positions.  These returning Hounds have got their work cut out for them, but hey, that’s a good thing!
