Point Park has won three games in a row including an 11-0 rout at Cincinnati Christian in its KIAC opener last Friday. Point Park played a very difficult non-conference schedule and is battle-tested with an overall mark of 6-5-1. The Pioneers have three more KIAC games on the schedule beginning with the Asbury game. Asbury is 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Eagles split two KIAC games thus far with a 4-3 (2OT) loss to Brescia (Ky.) and a 5-1 win over Berea (Ky.). The Eagles have a three-game win streak of their own, and they’ve won 5 of 6 following a 1-3 start to the season.
LAST MEETING: Point Park hosts Asbury for a rematch of last year’s Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Finals, which was won by Point Park, 5-4, at Cupples Stadium. The Pioneers won that game to earn their first-ever berth into the NAIA national tournament. Point Park trailed that game 1-0 and 2-1, but it had plenty of offense to build a 5-2 lead at the half. Asbury did not go quietly, however, with two goals in the second half. But Point Park was able to hold on to the 5-4 victory with some late defending.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ousman Jaiteh, F- Oz is a part of a cluster of Point Park players that head coach Jereon Walstra has recruited to come play on his Pioneer squad. A native of Gambia, he leads the team in scoring with eight goals, as well as notching one assist.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Does it matter? I’m impressed there is actually higher education south of West Virginia.
