According to the Antigua Observer, Antigua Barracuda FC will not return for the 2014 USL PRO season.
Chairman Gordon Derrick blames “financial constraints” — namely, being forced to play all USL PRO matches on the road in the US – for the decision.
Antigua was a true bottom feeder in 2014, not recording a single point during the season. They only scored 11 total goals, and allowed a whopping 91 to opposing sides.
This move is relatively unsurprising. Antigua was destined to leave USL PRO after the rapid expansion of the league in western US markets. Having to play every game on the road not only drained the Barracudas financially, but also emotionally. They almost looked apathetic by the time they had reached Highmark Stadium vs. the Hounds last season.
RIP, Antigua. We will sincerely miss our league-wide punching bag.
