Weekend Recap: Off and Running

Hounds defeat Harrisburg 5-2

Highlights

Nothing like a win to heal all wounds huh? And what a win it was! A statement 5-2 victory over interstate rival Harrisburg. The big take away from the game is Vincent and Kerr showing that their pre-season form wasn’t a fluke. It looks like they’re going to be quit the dynamic duo this season. Both Vincent and Kerr showed that they can find each other across the field, dribble around the keeper for easy chips, and if given space they can drill it past the keeper from as far as outside the 18. Harrisburg’s defense, which generally isn’t that bad, had trouble containing those two. Once Moloto, Cabrilo, Dantas, or any of the other forwards start to get going… man that’s going to be a nightmare for other teams to game plan for. In the past the Hounds offense tended to go through one or two guys. This year there are weapons all over the place.

This was the kind of win the Hounds needed at the start of the season. For the first time in a long time the team has confidence out the wazoo and the Steel Army is JUICED. It feels so good.

Notes

  • We tend to not do traditional recaps of games due to most of us enjoying beverages and having fun. It doesn’t really make for a nuanced post game writing. We might experiment with something audio related a little later, but for these recaps I’m just going to let the professionals do their thing a little further down.
  • Thanks to everyone who came out to the tailgate and game despite the cold! It was a hell of a good time.
  • Unfortunately we had some technical issues with the tifo so it didn’t go as planned. Here’s what it was going to look like if you’re curious.

What They’re Saying

The Riverhounds were sound systematically, too, beginning with a back line that looked so confident it was barely recognizable compared to all the panicky punts into the river we saw last summer. The midfield was solid, tight and occasionally ambitious. And up front … wow, hard to know where to start with the superlatives for Vincent and Kerr.

I’ll start with this: I had them wrong.

Matt Grubba – TribLIVE

“I didn’t touch the ball too much tonight, but I had great service all night. Bobby (Vincent) found me all night long, and Lebo (Moloto) put me in a few times,” Kerr said. “I rarely get one (goal), so to get three is a bit of a surprise. It’s like the gaffer (coach) said, you couldn’t have scripted it any better.”

Kyle Heizler – Reckless Challenge

The standout displays of Vincent and Kerr, scoring his first-ever hat trick, were promising for the season. The final score line would suggest that the Hounds dominated the game from kickoff to final whistle, but that’s not the case. The Islanders offered a good opening-day test for the Hounds.

Alan Saunders – Pittsburgh Sporting News

“It was just one of those nights,” said Kerr, who scored his first professional hat trick. “Every time I made a run, one of the boys found me. I know it’s not going to be like that every time, but I’m going to enjoy it tonight and hope it continues.”
