Midweek Recap: WE JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH

The Riverhounds score late and defeat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 1-0 in the U.S. Open Cup

YES

The Hounds pull off the upset in one of their biggest wins in club history thanks to Rob Vincent’s late goal. The Hounds looked good all game and had several great chances. The back line played phenomenal and prevented Tampa Bay from getting any real good looks at the net. Amazing performance all around. The only knock I have on the team is they could’ve taken a few more shots. There was mumbling in the stands that they caught some Pens-a-citis at times, passing when they should’ve taken a shot.

Vincent just needs to rip it at the top of the 18 all day every day. He’s been bank from there this year.

Next up in the Open Cup is D.C. United at Highmark Stadium on June 17th. D.C. United won the Open Cup in 2013, but fell to Rochester last year. This is a big one and dare I say a winnable match. We need to PACK HIGHMARK STADIUM! Drag your friends, family, co-workers… everyone you can. FORTRESS HIGHMARK! We’ll post ticket information as soon as we hear it.

The Hounds are back to league play this Saturday as cross state rivals Harrisburg City Islanders come to town. Kick off is at 7pm. Tailgate starts at 4.

Notes

  • Solid game from Okai. He came a foot away from being the star of the game with his free header early in the second. Okai was holding his neck after the game. Hopefully nothing too bad.
  • Hulings is having quite the cup run. Two starts, two clean sheets. Neither of the other Hounds keepers can claim that.
  • Arena picked up a nice little cut on his forehead late in the game.
  • Holy crap Tampa’s #5 is a giant. His size really counter acted Cabrilo’s and didn’t give him any chance to assert himself in the box.
  • Tampa tried to literally lay an egg in the second half leading to a rare indirect free kick inside the box.

What They’re Saying

John Krysinsky – Pittsburgh Soccer Report

In a pretty evenly played match, that became more physical in the later stages, the Riverhounds leading scorer, Vincent, found some space just outside the box, after receiving a ball from Tyler Pasher.

With room to spare, he drilled a shot that gave the Riverhounds the lead just as the announcement came over that there would be three minutes of stoppage time added to the match.

It was an intense match, as both teams exchanged possessions and found various counter chances. The Riverhounds were able to keep the ball for longer stretches — and attempted 17 shots, forcing Rowdies goalkeeper Matt Pickens to make four saves, and the home side set up 11 corner kicks (to just four for the Rowdies).

Steffens was concerned about the potential of the matching going into extra time, and was hoping for a goal in regulation as his team was playing its fourth game in the past 11 days, while the Rowdies hadn’t played since May 16.

“I knew we needed something magical, and we got it,” said Steffens.
