Besides announcing the long awaited regular season schedule last week, the Riverhounds also dropped their preseason schedule. As usual it’s a smattering of college teams, but it’s a different group than we’ve seen over the past few seasons.
2/28 – @ Penn State – 1 pm
3/6 – vs Ohio State – 1 pm
3/13 – vs Michigan – 12 pm
3/18 – vs Akron – 6 pm
Nothing against the local colleges the Hounds tend to play, but they aren’t exactly powerhouse programs. It tough to get a good idea of what the team will be like going into the season when they roll through the preseason. Last year most of the schools they faced were outside of the top 100. This year they’re mostly in the top 50. I don’t follow college soccer so I don’t have a lot to go on, but judging by the rankings the Hounds should have a tougher preseason, and that can only be a good thing.
It’s worth noting that last year the Hounds played almost twice as many preseason games as has been announced so far. Four games isn’t a lot to get your house in order before the regular season kicks off. I expect, or at least hope, that a few more matches will be announced.
If you’re new to the Steel Army or a veteran, just a reminder that we don’t really do anything organized for the preseason. Those of us who go to preseason games tend to take the opportunity to sit in the grandstands, relax, and do our own version of scouting. Preseason games at Highmark are open and free, so come on out if you can.
Also don’t forget the Steel Army Annual General Meeting is quickly approaching on February 20th! Come out to Highmark Stadium at 1 pm to discuss the upcoming season, meet some new friends, and pick up your 2016 membership package.
