Phoenix FC Wolves will continue to participate in USL PRO in 2014 under new ownership. A public announcement of the ownership group and other details related to the team will be made later this month.

Original Post:

News came out late last night that the USL took the ax to Phoenix FC’s franchise agreement.

ODFC news is reporting

ODFC news learned the club had its USL PRO franchise agreement retracted by the league because it defaulted on a deposit; did not follow several bylaws in the franchise agreement in regards to game operations, club operations and club-to-league communication; and failed to pay players in a timely manner during the club’s inaugural 2013 USL PRO season.

Phoenix has been a bit of a mess on the management side since day one, and it only got worse as the season went on. From what ODFC is reporting what we saw publicly was only the tip of the iceberg. It’s always a shame to see a club go, especially one with so much potential as Phoenix. Having poor management sink a club after only one season makes you appreciate the solid FO the Hounds have and the work they do. Hopefully Phoenix gets another shot with a better ownership group. For teams like LA and Sacramento to work the USL needs more (and stable) clubs in the west.

Finally, pour one out for our friends at La Furia Roja 1881. Those guys stuck with the team through all the troubles and showed everyone around the league that there are very passionate fans in Phoenix. Just as much as it’s a shame to see a team fold, it’s a shame that a great supporters group will no longer be with us.
