7PM – Highmark Stadium
The caravan of college clubs to come through the Highmark continues, as Bobby Mo travels out from the airport for another preseason friendly.
For the Colonials, this is an opportunity to get some local, quality off-season training for a club looking to ascend in an increasingly difficult Northeast Conference. Bill Denniston’s squad should feature forward Neco Brett, from Jamaica, who led RMU with 14 goals over the past season. In addition to Brett, Canada’s Bruce Cullen, the club’s leading assist man from 2013, should play, as well.
One person not available for the college side is senior Miro Cabrillo. Cabrillo, who is on trial with the Riverhounds, has looked formidable in his play, thus far, and could been playing himself into a contract with Pittsburgh. Cabrillo was a late substitute against Pitt, on Tuesday. Will he have the chance to lace up the boots against his college squad, two days later?
Justin Evans played many of Tuesday’s starting XI for 80 to 90 minutes, meaning there should be a vastly different squad taking the pitch tonight. Look to see Greg Blum, Joseph Ngwenya, Anthony Obodai, and Jose Angulo start and play nearly the entire 90 minutes. With only two matches left before the team heads to Orlando to open the 2014 campaign, there is precious few playing minutes left to decide who has earned a spot in the starting lineup, substitutes bench, or left on the training grounds. Add to that, that there are four, or more, players from Houston and one or two other suspected signings that could already be on their way to Pittsburgh, and it could quickly become a crowded locker room that will need to be trimmed down for March 29.
TAILGATE
We’re heading back to the West lot to prep for tonight. Festivities officially kick of at 5:30, but arrivals have been usually around 6 o’clock, or so. We will, again, be watching from the grandstands, section 104 or 105. If the weather stays annoying cold, look to see people taking in warmth in the Bistro on the West end of the stadium.
