RECAP: Jhonny Be Good, Hounds Win 2-1

By @SAdyson

It was a cold one. Players were warming up in parkas, and the temperature only barely got above freezing.

The one thing, however, that was not cold on Sunday was the Hounds’ play on the field at the Highmark.

Rochester–a USL PRO rival–rolled into Pittsburgh in a preseason match that had more significance than any of the matches Pittsburgh has played against college clubs.

The Hounds dominated possession early and struck twice, leaving Rochester to play catch-up for the rest of the game.

Jhonny Arteaga found the back of the net in the first half and found the foot of Mike Seth for an assist in the second half. This was Jhonny’s game, and it was good to see him finally hone his scoring touch this preseason.

  • Jhonny Arteaga played today like he had a chip on his shoulder. And there is nothing more dangerous than a player that is motivated because he feels as if he has to prove something. He was chirping at the other team, knocking down opposing players, and controlling the middle of the field. Angulo was not in the game, but it will be interesting to see the two forwards work together to terrorize the opposing back line this season.
  • Brian Fekete continues to look sharp at wing back. His speed is undeniable, and he seems to work really well on Marshall’s left side. He can seamlessly jump in on the attack and return to position with little time lost. He just might be a part of the solution to the woes on the Hounds’ back line.
  • Speaking of trialists, it looks as though Miro Cabrillo has solidified a spot on the Hounds’ roster. He came into the game after Ngwenya had a cramp in his right leg. He played midfield, and worked very well in space. Furthermore, he necessitates attention from more than one other player because of his larger frame. Look for Cabrillo to get more looks in the preseason.
  • Rochester’s only goal was conceded during–surprise, surprise–the last few minutes of the game. Hunter Gilstrap replaced Greg Blum at half time, who had until that point preserved a clean sheet. Expect play this season to dictate who will start in goal for the Hounds on April 12th.
